Harry Redknapp says that while he is a fan of Ange Postecoglou, the Australian’s first season in charge of Tottenham was nothing to write home about.

The season started in extremely promising fashion for Spurs but the wheels came off towards the end, with the Lilywhites going on a horror run in the last couple of months of the campaign and missing out on Champions League qualification.

All things considered, Redknapp believes that the 2023-24 season cannot be considered a successful one for his former side.

While promoting the fantasy football game Sorare, he said (as relayed by Football.London): “I like Ange Postecoglou very much. I like him an awful lot.

“But what do I make of the season? Very average, it was a very average season – going out early in both cups, not finishing in the top four with that squad. I wouldn’t say it was a fantastic season.”

Spurs should have secured Champions League football

Not a lot of pundits gave Tottenham a chance of finishing in the top six after they lost Harry Kane last summer, but Redknapp insisted that he expected the Lilywhites to get into the Champions League, given the quality they have in their squad.

He continued: “At the beginning of the season I really couldn’t see Spurs being out of the top four, I thought that the team, the players, would make top four for sure this year and maybe even win a cup but Tottenham went out early in both domestic competitions. I couldn’t say it was a great season and I’d be lying if I said it was.”

While the majority of the Tottenham fan base are fully on board with Postecoglou, there were murmurs of discontent towards the end of the campaign.

That was particularly the case when the Spurs boss seemed to accuse the supporters of being ‘fragile’ for wanting to see their side lose against Man City to ensure Arsenal did not win the title (Daily Mail).

However, Redknapp believes that those things will be quickly forgotten if Tottenham start well next season.

The 77-year-old added: “Any friction between Ange and the fans will be quickly forgotten. It’s like everything, when you’re winning everything’s great, when you lose a few games…bang! The game has gone that way now as a manager, you’re either fantastic or you’re useless, there’s no middle ground.

“I think it was Graham Taylor who said: ‘Your manager’s never as good as you think he is, or as bad as you think he is, he’s usually somewhere in between.’ And that’s probably the case with Ange. We can’t praise the performance and the quality of the football after the first 10 games only to turn on the manager and the team when they suddenly have a bad run.”

Tottenham fans always expected the 2023-24 season to be a transitional one, which is why the overwhelming majority of fans are fully behind Ange despite the unacceptable results in the final couple of months of the campaign.

However, the Spurs boss will be aware that if his side have a poor start to next season, doubts will start creeping into the minds of the players and the fans about whether his approach can work in the Premier League.
