$590m lottery winner, 90, sues son for ‘squandering her winnings’

A 90-year-old woman who hit a $590 million lottery jackpot is suing her son over claims he squandered tens of millions of dollars.

Gloria Mackenzie filed the lawsuit against her son, Scott, and his investment manager last month in Jacksonville, Florida.

Mackenzie, who won the massive cash windfall from a Powerball ticket six years ago, is claiming her son’s bad investments cost her an eight-figure amount after she trusted him with the money.

Before winning the lottery, Mackenzie lived a modest life in a small rented duplex. She said she had poor education and later relied on her son to manage the massive sum of money, News4Jax reported.

She bought the winning ticket worth $590 million in May 2013 and decided to take the lump sum, which amounted to $278 million after taxes.

Mackenzie divided the jackpot down the middle and gave half to her son, who promised to care for her for the rest of her life, according to the lawsuit.

Instead of taking care of her, MacKenzie claims her son and his investment manager both lived off her money while badly investing it, citing $10 million in damages.

Scott reportedly spent $1.2 million on a five bedroom home in a Jacksonville country club. He moved his mother in with him, but she has since relocated to Pennsylvania for unspecified reasons.

‘She…ends up living with another one of her children outside of Jacksonville. The sad this is Gloria could buy every assisted-living facility in Jacksonville,’ Anderson said.

The lawsuit also condemns Scott’s financial adviser Hank Madden, claiming the investments ‘just sat there earning nothing’ while Madden charged $2 million in fees.

‘You don’t have to know anything more than a branch manager at a bank to come back with some significant returns,’ Anderson said.

‘At the same time, he (Madden) was charging my lady, age 90 and in ill health, $2 million in fees.’

Scott MacKenzie has hired a lawyer of his own and plans to contest the suit.

‘Mr. MacKenzie is deeply disappointed with his family members’ decisions and their motivations in bringing this lawsuit, but is equally confident that the truth will ultimately prevail.

‘Although he strongly disagrees with the allegations that have been made, he will respect his family’s privacy by reserving any further comments until the case has been concluded,’ Scott’s lawyer, Lee Wedekind wrote.
