Why restructuring must be taken by force - Fani-Kayode

Former minister of aviation Femi Fani Kayode has said those agitating for restructuring may need to take it by force because Nigeria will never be restructured through constitutional means or the National Assembly.

The former minister made the statement in a Facebook post on Thursday July 27 when speaking on the backdrop of the Senate vote to reject a proposal to amend the 1999 Constitution to devolve more powers to the states.
He said it was glaring that restructuring could not be achieved achieved through the existing constitutional structure or the National Assembly.
Kayode said the northern region which exercises control of the National Assembly will always block any move to restructure the country.
He said: “From henceforth let it be clearly understood by all, including those that desire restructuring but who gave never participated in Nigerian politics, that we can never achieve it through the existing constitutional structure or the National Assembly.
“This is because the system is rigged and designed to protect and preserve itself and because the core north effectively has a power of veto in the National Assembly which it will always exercise in order to block any form of restructuring.
“From henceforth let it be clearly understood by all, including those that desire restructuring but who gave never participated in Nigerian politics, that we can never achieve it through the existing constitutional structure or the National Assembly.
“This is because the system is rigged and designed to protect and preserve itself and because the core north effectively has a power of veto in the National Assembly which it will always exercise in order to block any form of restructuring.
“It is this point that people like Nnamdi Kanu and other ethnic nationalist leaders came to appreciate long ago and it explains their "hardline" posture on these issues.
The bottom line is as follows: restructuring will not be given to us freely or on a platter of gold.
It must be taken and if necessary it must be taken by force.”

The former minister called for Nigeria to cease to be one nation if the country is not restructured, adding that he would rather live as a free man in an independent Oduduwa Republic than continue to live and die as a slave in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the former vice president Atiku Abubakar has condemned the Senate's decision to block the bill on the devolution of power to states across Nigeria.
Atiku in a series of tweet said the blocked bill is a lost opportunity to fulfill one of the All Progressives Congress (APC) election promises to Nigerians.
He said the bill would have been able to deliver the desired changed by shifting power closer to the Nigerian people.
