Army will deal with violent agitators - General Olonisakin warns Avengers

The chief of defence staff (CDS), Gabriel Abayomi Olonisakin, has vowed that groups associated with violent agitations in the country will be prosecuted by the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Olonisakin gave the warning on Saturday, November 11, during the induction of 20 sophisticated gunboats newly acquired by the Nigerian Navy at the Warri Naval Base, Warri, Delta state, The Tribune reports.

Speaking on the backdrop of recent threats by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to resume hostilities, the army chief said although there exits inalienable right of any group to agitate, any agitation done with violence was rather unconstitutional and would be resisted.
“Today, our nation is challenged by multifaceted threats from both continental and maritime fronts with a great manifestations," Olonisakin stated.
"Coming landward, there have been continued militarization of the Niger Delta and the proliferation of weapons among non-state groups.
"This unsavoury state of affairs has ominously ended up in a sharp increase in threat level and deepening in conditions inimical to security.

Meanwhile, some prominent Nigerians have advised the federal government to dialogue with the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) in order to prevent the country’s economy from relapsing into another recession.
Among those who called on the government to take cautious proactive steps over the threats by the militants to resume attacks was Chika Onuegbu, the chairman of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) Joint National Committee on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).
Onuegbu warned that fresh attack on oil installations could plunge the country’s economy into recession, the Guardian reports.
Similarly, human rights activist, Ann Kio-Briggs, called on the government to take the threats by the militants seriously.
She warned that the failure by the government to take the threats seriously could have negative effect on the economy.
