Kansas board meets with top school official as backers rally
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas' elected state school board convened a closed session Friday with a top education official under fire over questions about some funding has been distributed, as dozens of supporters and four former governors rally to his defense.
The State Board of Education met with longtime Deputy Education Commissioner Dale Dennis after a separate, private session with attorneys to discuss the legal issues raised by a state audit in December. The audit said a calculation used for decades by Dennis and his staff to allocate transportation funds among school districts is "not authorized" by state law.
The audit led Kansas House Speaker Ron Ryckman Jr.
