Britain’s ‘worst hotel chain’ has poo stains, creepy art and a rotting pigeon

A hotel chain revealed as Britain’s worst for the seventh year running, has had guests finding unflushed poo, dodgy decor and a dead pigeon rotting outside the window.

Britannia Hotels was ten times more likely to be rated poor for cleanliness than any other hotel group by guests surveyed for Which?’s annual hospitality rankings published today.

The consumer group asked more than 8,000 members to rate 40 hotel chains on everything from bed comfort to value for money and the quality of food and cleanliness.

Britannia, which has 61 hotels across the UK, was given one-star ratings in almost every category and an overall score of 39 per cent.

Droves of disgusted reviews online offer a glimpse into the chain’s sordid image, with Tripadvisor reviewers most often plumping for a ‘terrible’ rating at nine out of a sample of 10 branches viewed by Metro.co.uk.

Numerous guests who claimed to have stayed at the Britannia International Hotel in London in the past year said they spotted mice in their rooms and the bar and eating area.

Complaints against the Britannia Manchester hotel include ‘poo and condoms’ found on a windowsill, rotting potato chips under a bed and pubic hairs littering the beds and bathroom surfaces.

One guest who arrived to the sight of an unflushed poo in their toilet at the Britannia Edinburgh Hotel said staff did nothing after repeatedly complaining that the bog was out of order for several days.

A reviewer named Carla uploaded a picture of what appears to be a dead pigeon rotting outside the window after staying at a Britannia hotel in Bournemouth in September.

Reviewers have noted security issues along with the hordes of cleanliness complaints.

One, who claimed to have stayed at Britannia’s London hotel, said their window latch was broken and held in place only by a teaspoon.

A reviewer of the Britannia Birmingham Hotel uploaded pictures of what appears to be a door with no functioning lock, held shut by a makeshift clasp made with two hairbands, while another said they found empty booze cans on arrival at their room.

Another included a picture of a disturbing rendition of Andy Warhol’s classic portrait of Marilyn Monroe hung above the bed.

Complaints at most of the 10 branches also frequently mentioned overpowering smells, damp, mould and stained bedding.
