Red Dead Redemption Strange Man Theory Makes A Lot Of Sense
A reddit user posed the idea that the strange man found in the Red Dead Redemption series is actually Cain, the first murderer from the Bible.
A recently posed theory about the identity of the strange man from the Red Dead Redemption series comes to a unique conclusion, yet it makes a lot of sense. The strange man did not make a full in-game appearance in Red Dead Redemption 2, but his unique cameo only adds to the mystery surrounding him and raises more questions than it concretely answers.
There are many mysteries in the Red Dead Redemption series, though arguably one of the most cryptic is the identity of the strange man. Fans have speculated who this dark garbed individual could be ever since they encountered him in the side mission "I Know You" from the first game. Most theories surrounding the strange man identify him as some sort of otherworldly being including the likes of Death, Satan, or a demon. Recently, however, one player came up with a new theory of biblical proportions that is significantly different from many others, yet it still appears to make quite a bit of sense.
Reddit user Basketballjuice made an in-depth post explaining how they believe the identity of the strange man to be Cain from the Bible. This theory contains many spoilers for the first installment in the series. According to the religious text, Cain is not only the first human born, but he is also the first murderer after killing his younger brother Abel. Basketballjuice theorizes that in Red Dead Redemption, Cain is marked by God after committing this heinous act so that all will recognize him, but not truly know how they know him. The Reddit user also explains that anyone who tries to harm Cain will have vengeance enacted upon them 7 times over, explaining how John Marston gets shot nearly 21 times at the end of the first game after he tried shooting the strange man only 3 times. This theory also addresses why the game labels his house as "Serial Killer" if the player takes a photo of it.

The post has prompted an in-depth discussion surrounding the strange man's identity, with quite a few seeing some merit in the Reddit user's theory. Basketballjuice even went so far as to post their sources not just from Red Dead Redemption, but also the passages from the Bible that supports their Cain argument. The user also gave readers permission to make a full YouTube video about the theory, so long as they gave Basketballjuice due credit.
Like with most other in-game theories, there is no way of concretely knowing the true identity of the strange man unless developer Rockstar blatantly shares that information. This, however, should be one of those mysteries that stays a mystery. There are some story aspects, such as the fate of Red Dead Redemption's Abigail Marston, that should and likely will be answered at some point. That said, not every question a narrative poses needs to be answered, and leaving the door open in some respects can continue to generate interest in a story long after its conclusion. Revealing the strange man's true identity would take away from his ominous presence in the world of Red Dead Redemption, and therefore should be left alone going forward.
