Tottenham Hotspur recorded another Champions League win last night by scoring three past Eintracht Frankfurt in North London. Let’s take a look at five things we learned…
The performance – All-in-all, that was a much better performance from Tottenham last night. After a rocky first 20 minutes, Spurs clicked into gear and actually looked like the side we saw towards the end of last season. They controlled the game, looked solid at the back, and seemed capable of scoring from every single break. The Kane and Son link-up was also back, with Harry dropping deeper and Son playing on the shoulder. Lots of positive signs for Conte out there.
Top of the group – Spurs are now top of Group D in the Champions League, although things are tight. Tottenham are on seven points, with Sporting Lisbon and Marseille on six each, then Eintracht Frankfurt on four. If Spurs can grab a win at home to Sporting next time out, they will be in a fantastic position.
Bryan Gil cameo – One of the highlights of the match was seeing young Bryan Gil come off the bench and cause absolute chaos. First, he was put in behind by Harry Kane, only to leave the ball behind instead of squaring to Lucas Moura. Then he won it back, ignored Moura again, and won a penalty with some great dribbling. Then Kane missed the spot-kick. Then Spurs hit Frankfurt on the break again and Kane spooned a simple cross to Gil for a tap-in. The boy has a lot of energy to give, that’s for sure!
Lucas Moura returns – Lucas Moura also came off the bench for a late cameo, giving Conte some much-needed ammo in his squad. Once Kulusevski and Moura are both back match fit, the Italian will once again have five or six real choices up front, which Spurs have been lacking of late.
Tottenham are still Tottenham – 3-1 up with a man advantage and ten minutes to go. Only Spurs could threaten to drop points. But giving the ball away in a dangerous area and then conceding from a corner is exactly what Spurs did, before finding themselves under increasing pressure for the last five minutes. Squeaky bum time, to say the least!
