Journalist David Ornstein has shared his thoughts on the matter of Antonio Conte’s contract situation at Tottenham Hotspur, and claims no decision will be made until after the winter World Cup.

Since taking over in November 2021, Antonio Conte has lifted Tottenham into the top four, bolstered the squad with quality in depth, and made the team very difficult to beat.

A highly successful manager, Conte has plenty of trophies to his name, including a Premier League title with Chelsea, four Serie A titles with both Juventus and Inter Milan, and four domestic cup trophies too (Transfermarkt).

While some sections of the fanbase are growing weary of Conte’s intrinsically defensive approach, the vast majority of those connected to Tottenham Hotspur are keen to see Conte commit his future to the club.

Reports suggest Spurs will offer Conte a new contract within the next month (The Telegraph), and it could be a bumper deal worth £20 million a year according to Football Insider.

We shouldn’t expect Conte’s signature just yet though according to David Ornstein, who told The Five Insider that the Italian will wait until after the World Cup in Qatar to decide his future.

Ornstein said: “Antonio Conte is out of contract in 2023, but [Spurs] do have the option to extend by a year so they are pretty relaxed in that sense.

“You’ll have seen recent reports that they’re keen to open contract talks during the World Cup and I’m sure there’ll be conversations because that’s a chance for so many clubs and managers to talk about contracts and players too.

“But I don’t know how far that will get things moving. Conte tends to wait on these things to know how a season is going to pan out and how it looks, and when you speak to people with knowledge of his career and this situation, they do suggest that he’ll leave this until much later before making a final decision, even if there are conversations soon.”

To be honest, it makes sense for all parties to wait until the World Cup and focus on new contracts in the new year. While we’d love for Conte to commit now, there’s no rush at this moment in time, and it’s more important to focus on getting through this busy schedule with as many points as possible.
