Borussia Monchengladbach director Roland Virkus has remarked that the Bundesliga club will ‘try everything’ to tie down rumoured Tottenham target Marcus Thuram to a new contract this summer.

Thuram’s current contract at Gladbach runs out in June (Transfermarkt) and Tottenham were one of a whole host of clubs who were linked with a move for the forward ahead of the January transfer window (90Min).

It was reported by Foot Mercato towards the end of the window that Chelsea pushed hard to snap up the Frenchman but the player decided to stay at the German club as he prefers to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

AS (03/02/23 as relayed by SportWitness) revealed this week that Atletico Madrid may try to snap up Thuram in the summer after missing out on him in January, and added that Spurs may battle it out with the La Liga side for the 25-year-old’s signature.

Virkus has now said that Gladbach have not given up hope of tying down Thuram but he admitted that the club cannot afford to offer to do so if the player makes excessive salary demands.

The Bundesliga club’s director told Sky Germany (01/02/23 as relayed by Yahoo): “I can’t promise that both (Thuram and left-back Ramy Bensebaini) will stay with us beyond the season. But we will try to talk to both of them again.

“We will try everything (to keep them). But there may also be a point in time when we just can’t keep up. When it comes to sums that Borussia simply can’t afford.”

Spurs Web Opinion 

I do not think there is much chance of Thuram signing a new deal at Gladbach, particularly with Champions League qualification looking beyond the German club’s reach this season. 

A whole host of clubs around Europe will likely queue up to snap up the 25-year-old on a free transfer, and Tottenham’s decision on whether to enter the race would depend on a number of factors, including their decision on Danjuma on the future of Harry Kane.
