Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is close to signing a new contract with the club, as his current deal expires in June.
According to the Telegraph, Erik ten Hag will not give any assurance to De Gea that he will remain United’s No1 goalkeeper next season.
The Red Devils have the option to extend his contract by another 12 months but are looking to pen him down to a new deal on reduced terms.
He is currently on £375,000 a week deal at Old Trafford, and United want to lower his basic salary and boost performance-related add-ons.
David De Gea’s future at Man United is far from secure
The 32-year-old has not done himself any favour by making some costly errors lately. The most recent error came in the 1-0 defeat to West Ham.
He allowed a tame effort from Said Benrahma to hit the back of his net. His ball distribution was woeful, to say the least.
This has left United just one point ahead of Liverpool in the race for the top four spots in the Premier League.
He also put on a horror show in the Europa League quarter-final defeat to Sevilla last month.
De Gea is leading the race for the Premier League Golden Glove in 2022-23, but his errors have become too frequent lately.
He has made four mistakes leading to a goal in all competitions this season, the most of any goalkeeper playing in the English top-flight, along with Hugo Lloris.
Ten Hag cannot assure De Gea of the first-choice shot-stopper status next season, considering his catastrophic errors this campaign.
United are admirers of David Raya and Diogo Costa but signing a new goalkeeper is not Ten Hag’s priority this summer. He wants the club to sign an elite centre-forward and midfielder.
Only after strengthing these two positions should United think about signing a new goalkeeper who can challenge De Gea for the number one spot.
