Alasdair Gold has described Tottenham’s attempts to distance themselves from Julian Nagelsmann as a ‘misguided attempt to shape the narrative’.
It emerged last week that Spurs have ended their interest in Nagelsmann as the club did not see the German as the right fit for the project (Evening Standard).

Since then, some outlets have suggested that it was Nagelsmann who rejected Tottenham and that the club were merely trying to save face by claiming the contrary (Daily Mail).
However, other publications have insisted that the Premier League side legitimately had some doubts about the 35-year-old on the back of his experience at Bayern.
They were also said to be put off by the fact that he now has to look for new coaching staff since his backroom team decided not to follow him to his next club (Sport Bild).
Gold has now suggested in his latest column for Football.London that Tottenham were merely trying to get ahead of the curve instead of allowing Nagelsmann’s camp to shape the narrative.
The journalist explains that Spurs did contact the former Bayern boss and that he ticked several boxes for the North London club, who are looking for a project manager who plays attacking football that would excite the fans.
Gold believes it reflected poorly on Tottenham’s judgement to make it sound like they had no interest in Nagelsmann, given that he had been on the club’s radar previously.
The journalist stated that ‘something clearly happened’ in the talks between the parties that ended any progress and questioned why Tottenham did not even conduct a proper interview to fully discover Nagelsmann’s vision if they did turn him down.

Most of what is being reported on this matter basically appears to be guesswork as no one has any idea what happened behind the scenes.
It is quite possible that Nagelsmann was not convinced by the Tottenham project and turned down the chance to take over at the club.
However, it is equally possible that Spurs were talking to industry experts to find out more about the 35-year-old and were not convinced he would be a safe bet, now that his entire coaching staff who worked with him throughout his career, have parted ways with him.
It is worth remembering that Chelsea (and seemingly Real Madrid) have also come to the same decision about Nagelsmann.
The sudden nature of his exit from Bayern suggests that something might have gone on behind the scenes that has not been made public.
