I want to change my child’s name – but people say the alternative sounds dead rude
A MUM has shared how she regrets calling her baby daughter a certain name and is seriously considering changing it.
However, the new parent is facing a further predicament, as people have pointed out that the alternative moniker sounds slightly rude.
The woman shared that she had called her little girl Winter after some persuasion from her partner after she gave birth.
But the name has failed to grow on her, so she decided to turn to others with her problem to see what they thought
Writing on a new thread on Mumsnet, she explained: “We were so indecisive on a baby girl’s name, we didn’t name her for a month.
“I relented and agreed with my partner to call her Winter because of the pressure.”
However, the new mum then lifted the lid on several reasons why she’s not a fan and doesn’t see herself changing her mind.
She continued: “My main problem with it is it’s quite harsh sounding and the only nickname really available for it is Winnie (which I really don’t like).”
In the next part of her post, the parent offered up some alternatives she was thinking of – but said she couldn’t make up her mind.
She revealed: “I really like Willa – it sounds more whimsical.”
“We also discussed changing it to Aurelia, but it’s gotten really really popular on the charts so I don’t want her to be in school with 5 [other] Aurelia’s.”
That being said, she then asked others for their opinions – and what she should do.
She asked: “Should we change it to Willa or stick with Winter?
“Also if we did keep it as Willa should we keep winter as a middle name? Her current middle name is Maeve after my nan Mavis.”
As soon as she posted, people were quick to share their thoughts on her name dilemma.
And it wasn’t long before many pointed out that her number one contender – Willa – could cause problems in the future as it sounds too similar to a male’s genital parts.
One person said: “I’m not keen on any of the names you mentioned, but I like Winnie and Willow has grown on me.
“Willa is too similar to Willy, and Aurelia too complicated and frilly.”
A second added: “I’d stick with Winter. It’s much nicer than Willa which has an unattractive sound. I find it much more harsh than Winter.”
However, others said if she wanted to change, she should go for it.
One Mumsnet user commented: “Both lovely! Change it if it feels right.”
Another joined in the debate, as they typed: “You should use whatever name you feel most comfortable with.
“Have you tried calling her Willa/Aurelia a bit to see which feels better?
“That said, I don’t think there’s one name that’s objectively best here.
“Aurelia was given to 0.8%, so less than one in a thousand. There’s basically no chance of her being one of five in a class, so don’t discount it just for that reason.”
