Tanker rollover disrupts I-595 near Fort Lauderdale airport
A gasoline tanker overturned on I-595 on Monday morning after it was sideswiped by another vehicle, forcing the rerouting of traffic near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. .
Traffic on the busy Interstate 595 expressway was disrupted Monday morning after a gasoline tanker carrying 9,000 gallons rolled over onto a grass median after it was sideswiped by another vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
The semi-tractor trailer was headed westbound, east of I-95, near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when it was struck and then veered into the median before overturning on its right side.
The eastbound and westbound lanes of I-595 were closed, disrupting traffic in and out of Port Everglades, which is the main distribution point for petroleum products in South Florida.
In the meantime, workers pumped gasoline from the tanker to another truck. On social media, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said a small fuel leak had been secured by its HazMat team and advised motorists to “expect delays and road closures in the area until cleanup is complete.”
The airport also advised airline passengers to be aware of traffic delays including parts of Perimeter Road.
No injuries were reported.
