MATT FITZPATRICK is the class act at this week’s European Masters in Switzerland, and it is no surprise to see him well clear of his rivals in the betting.

Last year’s US Open champion is the 8-1 favourite, with everyone else in the field at least double those odds.

The world No 8 is clearly in a different league, and he also boasts a great record in this event – back-to-back victories in 2017 and 2018, and a runner-up finish in 2015.

But he has not been here since 2019 as he has played most of his golf in the States. And after a hectic recent schedule, it is debatable whether he would be lining up this time if the Ryder Cup was not just around the corner.

Fitzpatrick needs a top seven finish to knock Tommy Fleetwood out of the final qualifying place on the world points list. That will be his priority rather than a third win, and that could open the door to the bigger priced players.

Who is favourite this week?

Fitzpatrick is 8/1 with bet365 ahead of Ryder Cup hopeful Ludvig Aberg at 16/1.

Another outsider for a place in Rome in Nicolai Hpjgaard is 18/1 ahead of Adrian Meronk at 20/1.

Golf tips for the Omega European Masters

Robert MacIntyre’s share of fourth at the Czech Masters last week saw him tighten his grip on Ryder Cup qualification via the European points list, and he is again on offer at 28-1.

I liked MacIntyre’s chances last week, and he rewarded each way backers. But with a place in the team for Rome so close, the pressure will be even greater this time, so I prefer to look elsewhere.

Matt Wallace, a 22-1 shot, is probably still shaking his head in disbelief after fellow Englishman Todd Clements denied him the Czech Masters title with a sizzling final round 63 last week.

Wallace was also the fall guy in  Switzerland last year, where he was beaten in a play-off by Thriston Lawrence. At 22-1, the in-form Englishman looks a good bet to go one better.

Nicolai Hojgaard, one of five players with a mathematical chance of overtaking MacIntyre in the Ryder Cup race, will have his supporters after finishing a close third in the Czech event.

But he is another player who could feel the added pressure, and I prefer the chances of his twin brother, Rasmus.

Rasmus suffered a blip after claiming his fourth DP World Tour title at the Made in Himmeland tournament in July – but showed signs of a return to form last week, especially with his final round 68.

He was an impressive winner here a couple of years ago, powering home with a 63 on day four. At 30-1, he represents good value.

This week’s venue – Crans Sur Sierre, high in the Swiss Alps – encourages low scoring, with the ball travelling huge distances at the high altitude.

The fairways are pretty generous, so that tends to favour players who can be a bit erratic off the tee, but know how to make birdies. So Thorbjorn Olesen immediately springs to mind.

His winning score in all seven of his Tour wins has been ten under par or better – it was 24 under when  he won in Thailand earlier this year.

The former Ryder Cup player had to settle for a share of 11th last week despite finishing 15 under. But he can be backed at 50-1, and if the birdies continue to flow he could make those odds look pretty generous.

Marcel Siem’s resurgence as a 40-something shows no sign of slowing. He was runner-up at Crans way back in 20o6 and has played well here in  the last two years, so odds of 70-1 look reasonable.

Scotland’s Conor Syme produced his best performance in ages when he was fourth last time out at the ISPS Handa event, and he has each way claims at 125-1.
