I tried a viral TikTok cleaning trick for repelling dust – it actually made it worse, people suggested an alternative
A HOMEOWNER has shared her experience after trying a viral cleaning hack.
The TikToker, who describes herself as in her “domestic era,” was not overly impressed with the trick.
In her video, Lucy Kalice (@lucykalice) explained: “I’m trying viral cleaning hacks to see if they actually work.
“I’m going to see if wiping oil on my bedside tables acts as a dust repellant.”
Lucy showed her followers her black bedside table, which had gathered a thin layer of dust over three weeks.
“Black bedside tables show up so much dust if you know you know,” she said.
She tried a viral cleaning tip from TikTok, which involves mixing three kitchen staples to create a homemade dust repellant.
“Lucy told viewers: I’m mixing up olive oil, white vinegar, dish soap, and some water.”
She recommended giving the bottle “a good shake” before using it on surfaces in your home.
“I’ve just used kitchen paper, poured the mixture on, and wiped it down,” Lucy said,
“Now I have to wait and see how quickly the dust gathers,” she said, showing her audience her clean table.
In a second clip, Lucy showed her followers the results of the DIY mixture.
She compared her bedside locker three weeks after using the solution to the level of dust it had beforehand.
“There is definitely less dust but I did leave a piece of paper on the bedside table so there’s a big square that hasn’t any dust on it,” Lucy explained.
She continued: “I did notice though on the front of the drawer there’s loads of dust when usually there isn’t any.
“I did wipe that over with the olive oil and for that reason, I probably wouldn’t do it again.”
In the clip’s caption, she concluded: “Oil as a dust repellant gets a four out of 10.”
One of Lucy’s followers offered an alternative solution to her dust problem.
“Use fabric softener and hot water, it works so well and smells really good,” the viewer suggested.
Another TikTok user said: “Oil is so sticky when left on things so not surprised.”
“I’ve seen a lot of people use fabric softener apparently it acts as a barrier to prevent dust from sticking,” commented a third person.
