Guglielmo Vicario has said that there is a lot of belief in the Tottenham dressing room that they can achieve something special this season but admitted that he and his teammates have to be focused on one game at a time.
While the conversation in the media over recent weeks has been about the race for a fourth spot between the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and Manchester United, one gets the feeling that internally at Spurs, they have set their aims much higher.
In fact, Ange Postecoglou himself said last week that his side will keep looking to chase down the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City until it is mathematically impossible (Football.London).
After Tottenham’s win over Brighton, captain Son Heung-min said that he and his teammates are dreaming of doing ‘something special’ this season (NBC Sports).
Curiously, that is the very same terminology which has now been used by Vicario, who insisted that the Spurs players will look to win every game they take part in.
The goalkeeper told TNT Sports: “I know we’ve missed some trophies in the past and we have this desire to do something special under Ange. I think we can learn a lot but we have to stay focused and listen to him and try to make something special for Spurs.
“We have to be focused on game by game and win every game we face and then at the end we can see what we can achieve. Now I think it’s too early to say something about the end of the season.
“We have to try to do our best to win every game, to give respect to the opponents but not be scared to play the teams that are in better positions than us. Then we’ll see at the end of the season because we want to do something special.”
Vicario is enjoying Ange Postecoglou’s style
Vicario himself has had to get used to a new way of playing at Tottenham compared to what he was doing at Empoli, which Ange Postecoglou demanded that his team play out from the back.
The 27-year-old acknowledged that there are risks involved and the occasional mistakes are inevitable but he insisted that he is enjoying the approach.
He said: “I enjoy [playing with my feet] a lot. I changed, of course, this season there are some extremes compared to what I did in the past and last season but I think the direction of football now, to get the keeper involved in the build-up is very important.
“Of course, you don’t have to overdo it but you have to take some risks, and good risks, and when you can use the keeper as a spare man you can find some solutions from the back and you can break some lines of pressure from the opponents. So personally it’s something I love a lot.
“Sometimes it’s a little bit dangerous [with the high line] because you can be watching the striker and the ball is in the middle of the two of you and you have to make your decision in such a quick time, but you have to deal with it.
“I think the new evolution of football now, it’s also for the keeper to play in that way and you have to take some risks. Sometimes maybe you can be wrong but you accept this.”

While the Tottenham players understandably do not want to publicly spell out that they are in the title race and put more pressure on themselves, it is clear that they have their eye on the summit of the Premier League table.
While that might be almost impossible to achieve, especially given the kind of form Manchester City are in, there is nothing wrong with dreaming big. That is the kind of mentality that one wants in the squad.
