Eric Dier has revealed that Ange Postecoglou and his coaching staff do not do tactical work in training and are more focused on using specific drills to improve different aspects of the side.
Dier has played under managers with many contrasting styles for both club and country over the years, with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte, Ange Postecoglou, Gareth Southgate and now Thomas Tuchel all having quite distinct ideas about the game.
Perhaps nowhere is the difference as stark as between Conte and Postecoglou, with the Italian opting for a safety-first approach while his successor at Tottenham encourages his side to play with the handbrakes off.
Postecoglou prefers to avoid tactical work in training
Dier has noted another key difference between the two, explaining that the Italian’s entire focus leading up to matches will be on tactical work while the Australian does not do any such shape work in training.
The former Tottenham man said on The Overlap about Postecoglou: “Interestingly, he really doesn’t do any tactical work (in training). ‘What he does is, every single training drill from Monday to Friday is drawn up to represent the way that he wants to play.
“Conte, I could do it blind, but that was a lot of tactical work Monday to Friday, a lot of ten versus zero, walkthroughs. You were so well drilled, it would be ingrained in you.”
Dier also spoke about the ‘Spursy’ tag, insisting that it was often quite unfair, but he admitted that failing to win a trophy at Tottenham is something he will regret for the rest of his life.
He added: “I would call it lazy when English media used the term ‘Spursy’ as the Tottenham mentality. Because you could look at any club in the Premier League and they could lose a game, and they don’t have that tag from the past, so no one uses it.
“History plays a huge part in it. When Mauricio Pochettino was the manager of Tottenham, I don’t think for five or six years, anyone could possibly call us ‘Spursy’.
“I think we were aggressive, and we were constantly on the front foot. I think it would be difficult to call us “Spursy” under Antonio Conte as well, as I don’t think anyone enjoyed playing against that team either.
“It’s going to be something that I live with for the rest of my life that we didn’t win anything at Tottenham, and there are times where we should have. The year Leicester City won the title, we could have won it, the same with the year after when Chelsea won it, so you’re always fighting against that.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is quite interesting to hear that Postecoglou and his coaching staff do not do much work on the team’s shape. That is perhaps an attempt by the Australian to ensure that there is some novelty in the drills and that the players enjoy coming to training, which would not be the case if it is repetitive shape work.
