My ‘happy color’ interior design tip will give your home a pick-me-up – ignore an ‘obvious choice’ for a magical upgrade
ONE award-winning interior designer shares her tricks for giving your home some personality with a pop of color.
Her innovative tips are meant to elevate your space and show off your style.
Interior designer Deborah Bettcher of Decorating Den Interiors believes in “brightening up your home” as well as “your spirits.”
If you tend to be “cautious about your design decisions,” she is determined to break you out of your decorating comfort zone.
This applies to those who have played it “safe” by mainly using neutral colors such as white and gray throughout their home.
She is also coming for you if your space is mostly full of dark wood furnishings or leather seating.
But not to worry – she is ready to get your room out of a rut.
“If you’re feeling ready for a pick-me-up, try adding some happy colors to your decor,” she explained on her website.
When selecting the ideal shade for you, she shared one piece of advice.
“Think about happy memories,” she said.
“Maybe you love the sparking blue waters at the shore. Pink may remind you of birthday parties, ribbons, and cotton candy,” she continued.
You can even go with red if it stirs up “memories of Christmas at your grandmother’s house.”
For Bettcher, yellow and orange tones remind her of the “intoxicating scents of the citrus groves” on the way to her uncle’s home in Arizona.
It’s all about “striking a positive note.”
And remember – there are no wrong answers when choosing your own “happy color.”
Once you have a shade in mind, it’s time to incorporate that uplifting feeling into the current color scheme of your space.
Bettcher also wants you to think outside-the-box.
“Paint is an obvious choice, but why not add more personality with wall covering? A small space like a powder room is a great start,” she said.
“Colorful wallpaper can work magically to set a new mood in a dining room,” she added.
Another option is a “fun” wallpaper mural.
She advises finding a motif that reminds you of your favorite place and creates “a focal point.”
Another way to make your shade blend in seamlessly is to lay a “fresh foundation” with an area rug.
This can help tie in your “happy color” with the existing colors in your furniture.
Adding your shade to drapery panels, as well as pillows, can also make a dramatic and decorative difference.
Try to introduce window treatments in order to “interject color” into otherwise boring spaces and incorporate contrasting chairs to “tell your color story.”
A colorful chair can pick up shades in an area rug and give your space some “charm.”

“Table lamps or pendants may introduce not only color to the scheme but also some sparkle,” she said.
Adding an extra pop to your pillows is yet another way to brighten up your space.
“Toss pillows with bold prints and fun trim add interest,” she said.
Meanwhile, incorporating some art can help show off your personality without breaking the bank.
“Classic? Artful? Animal loving? Whether a thrift shop find or the work of a favorite artist from a local art show, artwork can, not only introduce color, but also tell your story,” she said.
