50 Shades of Grey

Jamie Dornan plays the cold, possessive, and sociopathic Christen Grey, a 27-year-old billionaire entrepreneur who is interviewed by Anastasia Steele (played by Dakota Johnson) and becomes interested in making her his “submissive.” Christian introduces Ana into a dark world of sadomasochistic pleasure (though some would argue that it is more pain than pleasure in this series, since much of it is more coercive than consensual), and basically tries to force her into being a submissive even though she is uncomfortable. Dan Gallagher is a married and successful lawyer in Manhattan who starts a dark romantic affair when he meets Alexandra Forrest, an editor for a publishing company. Alex becomes “obsessed” with him, engaging in many disturbing behaviors to keep him around (including kidnapping his daughter and killing and boiling his daughter’s pet rabbit). The sudden and abrupt exposure of Jackson’s true sociopathic and manipulative character behind his good-boy charm leads to a dark “could have been” romance where Lisa is then forced to fight for her life using only her intelligence, instincts, and resourcefulness.

Gone Girl 

Gone Girl follows the dark and twisted love story of psychopathic Amy Dunne and her narcissistic husband, Nick, who engages in an affair with a younger student. What started out as a fairytale romance becomes a psychological thriller about a woman who is willing to do anything to get revenge. Amy creates her own “whodunnit,” faking her own disappearance and alleged murder to frame her cheating husband who she feels has taken advantage of her throughout their marriage.
