It’s been 27 years since the R&B crooner released her hit single You Might Need Somebody back in 1997 when she was only 18-years old.

Now the pop and soul powerhouse has teamed-up with fellow 90s music icon, Shaznay from hit girl group All Saints, as a featured artist alongside reggae DJ General Levy, 53, for the new brilliant new song.

Nostalgic music lovers already deem the song to be a drum and bass classic. Fans have also stormed the music videos comment section to comment on the singers age defying beauty.

Another fan shared a similar sentiment, commenting: “What a song! Such a throwback to the glory days of the late 90s.”

The London-born songstress would begin her music career at the age of 15.

Record label owner and music producer at the FreakStreet record label Kwame Kwaten, 56, overheard Shola singing to herself on a platform at Hammersmith tube station.

On her 16th birthday, she would sign a recording contract with Warner Music Group and released her first single, You’re the One I Love, to a lukewarm reception in 1996.

Shola’s second single You Might Need Somebody would be a far greater success reaching number 4 on the UK Singles Chart back in April 1997.

The Turley Richards cover is her biggest hit to this day. The song remained on the top 40 for almost two months, and became one of 1997’s biggest hits.

In May 1997, Shola performed the hit song at Wembley Stadium as part of the build-up to the rugby league Challenge Cup Final.

The success of the single inspired a re-release of You’re the One I Love, which reached number 3 in the UK Charts in August 1997.

In September that same year, Shola released her debut album Much Love. The album peaked at number 6, in the UK album charts.

Shola is one of the UK’s most successful R&B, with her 1997 debut album Much Love entering the UK charts at number 6, and selling over one million copies.

That same year, the music icon won two MOBO-awards, one for Best Newcomer and one for Best R&B.

Her success would continue in February 1998 when the talented star won a Brit-award for Best British Female and two MOBO Awards for Best Newcomer and Best R&B Act.

The pop star took a break from recording shortly after releasing her second album in 1999, called In Return, allegedly after it failed to be match the success of her debut album.

The album did produce what has been considered since it’s release, a UK garage classic Imagine, which the NME magazine included in their 25 essential UK garage anthems list in 2019.

Her third album Supersonic was released in 2002.

The singer narrated a Channel 4 documentary called My Crazy New Jamaican Life in 2013.

The pop songstress would release her first solo project 13 years later, the eagerly awaited reggae influenced EP, Surreal back in October 2015.

The vocalist of Scottish, Dominican and Saint Lucian descent, has become more reflective in recent years, telling the Metro back in 2022 that she did not feel prepared for 90s fame.

She said: “For all of us [her and former record label] it was a big learning curve. It was a teething process. I was teenager, and it was a huge whirlwind.”

Shola continued: “A lot of the time, I couldn’t catch my breath to even figure out what I was experiencing. It was all happening so fast.”

The noughties star had son Mekhi back in 2003 with her partner Raphel which has had been reported as a much needed personal and professional break.

The Brit-award winning singer is still recording music and touring, including a sold-out performance ealier this month with UK garage legend, DJ Spoony at the Royal Albert Hall with a live orchestra.

Shola has a son by the name of Mekhi with her partner Raphael, and regularly posts gorgeous snaps on Instagram, updating fans on her recent adventures.

The UK Garage singers most recent visit was to World Peace Yoga retreat in India, for her birthday in March of this year.
