EXPERTS have revealed an easy trick to boost your car’s air con for free while saving 25% more fuel.
Drivers could save hundreds every year at the push of a button thanks to the handy tip.
Darren Miller, motoring whizz from Big Wants Your Car, urged Brits to get to grips with how to use their AC properly as summer rapidly approaches.
With temperatures peaking at 31C just last week, we’re almost certain to see more hot weather in the coming months.
And researchers at the Center for Disease Control in the US suggest that just a single hour on a 26C day could send conditions in the cabin above a sweltering 50C.
However, Darren warned that many are unknowingly making it harder for them to stay cool on the road.
He explained that motorists should actually hold off on hitting the blower when they first get in the car.
Instead, he suggested opening all the windows first to lower the temperature more efficiently.
He said: “It lets fresh air flow through the car, which means you won’t need to use the air conditioning as much as using a lot of air conditioning can make your car use more fuel, by more than 25%.”
Darren also advised making a subtle shift in how you direct the jet of cool air, adding: “Instead of just aiming the air at your face, it’s better to spread it out so that everyone in the car feels comfortable.
“This will help the air conditioning system work better overall and means you use less energy on air conditioning.”
The benefits of the hack stretch beyond comfort, though, as drivers can enjoy better deals at the pump.
A 25% cut in fuel use could save you around £18 every time you fill up, based on average tank size and current petrol prices.
If you head to the forecourt just once every two weeks, this would work out at a saving of over £400 a year.
