Fabrizio Romano has said that Liverpool are planning to ‘go very big’ on what looks increasingly like being their first signing of the summer transfer window.
On Wednesday, the news broke that the Reds were pursuing a move for Martin Zubimendi, with Real Sociedad reluctantly accepting to let him leave if he wishes to swap San Sebastian for Anfield.
Speaking on his eponymous YouTube channel last night, the Italian journalist outlined that LFC chiefs are happy to push the boat out in order to land the 25-year-old, who’s turned down other elite clubs in Europe but could yet be swayed by Richard Hughes and co.
Romano outlined: “His release clause is €60m [£51.7m], taxes included – an expensive deal, but Liverpool want to go very big on this one. Liverpool feel that they can reach an agreement with Real Sociedad or trigger the clause. Liverpool are very optimistic on the club side; now working on the player side.
“Many clubs tried to convince Zubimendi in the last two or three years – Barcelona, Bayern, Arsenal. Many clubs spoke to the player but he wasn’t keen on the move, but now Liverpool are going very big, using the ability of their directors to try and persuade the player, present a counterproposal and find a way. Liverpool are actively working on a deal for Martin Zubimendi, their top target for a new midfielder.”

In the same update, Romano left viewers under no illusions as to what he thinks of the Spain international, describing him as a ‘special’ player who belongs in the ‘top, top category’.
Liverpool may have developed a reputation for being overly cautious in the transfer market under FSG’s stewardship, but we’ve seen in the past that they’re not afraid to spend big when they identify the perfect player to bring in at Anfield.
Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai all cost £60m or more, while this time last year the club had agreed an eye-watering £111m fee with Brighton for Moises Caicedo before Chelsea hijacked the move.
After going for eight weeks of the transfer window without any new additions, Liverpool could be about to make a big splash with their potential first acquisition, rather than simply dipping their toes into the market for a low-key, cut-price signing.
