Tottenham hatch a left-back plan for the January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made a decision on whether to sign a left-back in January after Ange Postecoglou changed his mind about one player.

Do Tottenham need to sign a left-back in January?

There is no doubt that Spurs need reinforcements at the back in the upcoming transfer window, with a centre-back being a clear priority due to the injuries that the club have suffered in that role.

However, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham will also be in the market for a left-back.

While Destiny Udogie remains the club’s first choice in that role, Djed Spence has performed admirably whenever he has asked to fill in for the Italian, but that is not expected to stop the club from signing a left-back.

Ange Postecoglou makes decision on senior Spurs man

Postecoglou used Ben Davies as a left-back a few times early in his Tottenham career, but the Welshman has almost exclusively played as a centre-back over the last 12 months.

According to Football London, the Australian no longer sees the 32-year-old as a left-back in his system and primarily wants the former Swansea man to be a cover for the central defensive roles.

This is given as the reason why the Tottenham head coach has decided to add another left-back to his squad next month.

A left-back will not be Spurs’ priority in January

One can certainly understand why Postecoglou would want to bring in a suitable backup for Udogie and move Spence to his natural right-sided role.

However, addressing that position will not be Tottenham’s top priority in January as additions in the middle of the park and in attack are much more pressing requirements at the moment.
