9 prisoners, including 2 Afghans, executed in Iran’s Ghezel Hesar prison

Iran’s Human Rights Organization has reported the execution of nine prisoners, including two Afghan nationals, at the Ghezel Hesar prison. The executions took place on Friday, January 3, with the prisoners convicted of various crimes, primarily drug-related offenses.

The organization stated that six of the executed prisoners were charged with murder, while three others were executed for drug-related crimes. Among those executed, the two Afghan nationals were identified as Amir and Padsha.

This follows reports from another human rights organization, Hengaw, which revealed the execution of an Afghan national at Ghezel Hesar as the new year 2025 began. Hengaw also stated that three executions, including that of the Afghan citizen, were carried out on January 1.

The frequency of executions in Iran, particularly those involving Afghan citizens, has surged in recent months. In addition to the recent executions, the Iranian Human Rights Organization also reported the execution of an Afghan national in Lorestan province on charges of “premeditated murder” on December 31, 2024.

According to the organization’s data, approximately 300 individuals, including 72 Afghan citizens, have been executed in Iranian prisons in 2024. This rising number of executions has sparked significant international criticism, with various human rights groups calling for an immediate halt to the death penalty in Iran.

Despite the growing calls from international organizations to end executions, the Iranian government continues its use of capital punishment, particularly in drug-related cases and violent crime charges. The execution of Afghan nationals has drawn increased attention, as many rights groups urge the international community to pressure Iran to reconsider its stance on the death penalty.
