High-profile raid rounding up undocumented immigrants eyed in Trump's opening days: report

President-elect Donald Trump's administration is plotting a high-profile surprise raid rounding up undocumented immigrants in the nation's capital in the early days after he takes office, according to a report.

Trump's transition team has met with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, officials and repeatedly inquired about resources available to carry out the raids at a workplace in the metro area, NBC News reported, citing three people familiar with the discussions.

Businesses that could be targeted include agricultural, construction, hospitality, and health care companies.

The raid could come as early as Jan. 20 — Trump's inauguration day.

Trump has vowed to be more aggressive in his second term when it comes to enforcing immigration laws, with top advisers such as Stephen Miller promising a "shock-and-awe blitz" of orders and actions that will target millions of immigrants and their families.

“Trump will unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to implement the most spectacular migration crackdown,” Miller told The New York Times in late 2023.

Trump has repeatedly said he would begin deportations on his first day in office, even writing in November "TRUE!!!" on Truth Social in response to a right-wing commentator who said he would declare a national emergency and use military assets to lead "a mass deportation program."

Tom Homan, director of ICE during the first Trump administration who has since been tapped as his “border czar,” has said they may carry out mass deportations by deporting entire families together — even if children were born in the United States and are citizens.
