Coronation Street fans reckon they’ve worked out the real reason for Sally Ann Matthews’ furious rant amid cast cuts
CORONATION Street fans think they’ve sussed out the reason behind Sally Ann Matthews’ recent furious rant.
The actress, who plays Jenny Bradley in the soap, are fearing she has been axed from the cobbles.
Coronation Street fans have ‘worked out’ why Sally Ann Matthews ranted online[/caption]Corrie is currently going through a crisis amid ITV’s cash woes, which have been caused by soaring telly production costs and a fall in advertising.
As a result, the characters are now facing having their on-screen appearances slashed, their contracts shortened or worse – being axed completely.
Five cast members have either quit or revealed they have been written out of the soap in the past month.
And viewers are now worried Sally Ann, 50, could be following them out of the door.
Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan said: “I feel Jenny definitely going as well after this news… and I reckon that’s why Sally Ann Matthews was on that live and spilling on Corrie and ITV because she knew she’d already been axed.”
Another added: “I think she’ll go next, I have feeling too.”
A third wondered: “Or they’ve changed her to a 0 hour contract?”
Just this week, Charlotte Jordan became the latest star to quit Coronation Street.
Charlotte, 29, plays barmaid Daisy Midgeley, who is also the stepdaughter of Sally Ann’s character Jenny.
Following news of her departure, Jenny spoke out and said she was “gutted” to learn she is leaving.
Last week, we told how Sally Ann was hauled before Coronation Street bosses after she ranted about the cash crisis on Instagram.
The star, who made her Corrie debut in 1986, claimed that cast members no longer filmed on location due to money troubles.
“We don’t do on location … right … ok so the whole ‘Corrie doesn’t do location any more,” she said.
“Thankfully because I fricking hate being on location – location is s**t – I hate it.
“So I’m glad ITV have got no money – am I allowed to say that?
“Well I have said it.”
Sally Ann also told fans: “You’re not going to be seeing Jenny for quite a long while,” she said. “So that’s that.”
Jenny only appeared in 36 episodes last year.
A TV insider said: “It’s not the first time Sally has raised eyebrows with her comments.
“It’s no secret that the budget isn’t what it used to be, but it’s not something that the actors are encouraged to speak about publicly.
“She’s due to go in and meet with bosses and talk about how she is feeling on the soap in the general. She’s clearly not happy and neither are they.”
Coronation Street's most recent exits
Charlotte Jordan announced she was quitting Coronation Street on January 7, 2025. She has played Daisy Midgeley for four years.
Colson Smith revealed he had been axed as Craig Tinker on January 6. He said to fans on social media: “Autumn last year I was told that Craig Tinker’s time on the Cobbles is to come to end in 2025.”
Sue Cleaver exclusively told The Sun On Sunday on January 4 that she has quit playing Eileen Grimshaw after 25 years. Sue has already filmed her exit scenes.
Luca Toolan suddenly bowed out this month after his character Mason Radcliffe was brutally murdered. Luca was told his character was getting the chop last year.
Sue Devaney was said to be ‘furious’ after discovering she was being killed off. She found out last month her character, Debbie Webster, will die in a health storyline this year.
This is the second time it has been feared Sally Ann’s role on the soap has been axed.
Last summer, the actress uploaded another concerning clip to Instagram that worried her followers about her future on the show.
Speaking to fans during a late night Instagram live, Sally Ann revealed she hasn’t filmed on the cobbles for a long time – and that fans shouldn’t expect to see her for a long time.
She said: “I chose to get on an airplane because I’m particularly quiet at work.
“I’ve got like a million years off, so I chose to go on an aeroplane and I chose to remember happier times.”
The star said she has been to Cyprus twice within five weeks but was planning to go away again.
She continued: “And then I’m going to go back to Cyprus, and do nowt.
“And at some point I might get a job and someone might employ me, potentially.”
