UN stresses the critical need for protecting Afghanistan’s Glaciers

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has stressed the importance of protecting Afghanistan’s glaciers and warned that these vital resources are rapidly melting due to climate change.

On the occasion of World Water Day, the FAO issued a statement on March 22, that Afghanistan’s glaciers are one of the most crucial sources of water for agriculture and surrounding areas. The organization has warned that the effects of climate change are accelerating the melting of these glaciers, which could worsen the water crisis in Afghanistan and the region.

The FAO emphasized that protecting these water resources is essential to mitigate the effects of climate change and address the global water crisis. They highlighted the crucial role these glaciers play in sustaining both water supplies and ecological balance.

The FAO has called for immediate action to protect Afghanistan’s glaciers and urged sustainable planning for water resource management in the country. It warned that if serious measures are not taken to reduce the impacts of climate change and manage water resources, Afghanistan could face a severe water shortage in the future.

Afghanistan’s glaciers are among the country’s most important water reserves, feeding major rivers like the Kabul, Helmand, and Amu. These resources not only provide drinking water but are vital for maintaining ecosystem balance, agricultural irrigation, and hydropower generation.

However, in recent years, rising temperatures and reduced rainfall have accelerated the melting process, raising significant environmental concerns.
