'Not just chaos': CNN panel warns change in flagship policy set to blow up in Trump's face
Although President Donald Trump had pledged to primarily target violent criminals for deportation during the 2024 presidential campaign, multiple reports suggest that his administration has been going after any immigrants it can find — including those who entered the country legally to claim asylum.
While discussing the administration's immigration policies on CNN, conservative Jonah Goldberg pointed out Monday that the administration now seems to be targeting immigrants who have been paying taxes by getting the Internal Revenue Service to share data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"They're going after more of the legible undocumented immigrants, the ones that the government can see because there's paperwork on them," he said. "And by definition, if you're sending money into the IRS, right, if you're paying your taxes, if you're showing up for immigration appointments, as these Cuban immigrants did in Florida this week, and they got detained while showing up to appointments, you're not getting drug gangs, you're not getting criminals and rapists. You're getting people who are trying to play by the rules as best they can and make a living. and I think... that's a lot more politically fraught than they appreciate."

CNN's Stephen Collinson agreed with Goldberg that the Trump administration could be causing significant political problems.
"I think what's going to end up happening potentially is that undocumented migrants that largely obey the law are going to stop filing tax returns, and that's going to cause not just chaos," he said. "The government won't know where everybody is. It's going to cost billions of dollars in revenue."
