‘SNL’ Addresses Morgan Wallen’s Stage Walk-Off With ‘Weekend Update’ Joke
Morgan Wallen’s abrupt exit from the Saturday Night Live stage was resurrected for a “Weekend Update” joke. On the April 5 episode of the NBC late-night sketch comedy series, Colin Jost cracked a joke about the country singer’s confusing walk-off at the end of the show the prior week.
While presenting a news story about the stock market, Jost said, “Just in the past two days, investors have lost over $6 trillion. Money is leaving the stock market faster than Morgan Wallen at 'goodnights.'"
A photo of Wallen hightailing it off the SNL stage after only saying goodbye to host Mikey Madison then flashed onscreen.
Jost’s joke came after Wallen’s post-show social media activity was referenced in the show’s cold open. In the opener, James Austin Johnson impersonated President Donald Trump and joked about tariffs being placed on an island "uninhabited by humans.”
“It’s called Heard and McDonald Island,” Johnson cracked. “McDonald Island. I would love to visit there. Can you imagine that? Big Mac and a hula skirt. Get me to God’s country, right? Remember that?”
Shortly after Wallen’s SNL walk-off on March 29, he posted a photo of a private jet with the caption “Get me to God’s country.” The post sparked speculation that the singer had had enough of Studio 8H and was ready to get home to Tennessee.
An insider told Entertainment Weekly that Wallen meant nothing by his early exit from SNL. “[He exited] the way he entered and exited the studio all week during rehearsal and camera blocking," the source told the outlet.
Another source told TMZ that there was no beef between Wallen and the SNL cast and that he’s welcome to return to the show any time.
