India’s Foreign Minister: “Our Brand is Technology, Pakistan’s is Terrorism”
Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar criticized Pakistan, contrasting India’s tech-driven global brand with Pakistan’s association with terrorism and instability.
Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Foreign Minister of India, delivered a strong speech at Charotar University of Science and Technology in Gujarat, where he sharply criticized Pakistan’s policies of fostering terrorism. He pointed out that Islamabad had become trapped in the very terrorism it once nurtured to destabilize other countries. Jaishankar highlighted the “dangerous habits” Pakistan has developed in supporting terrorism, which he described as an obstacle to its own progress and in contrast to India’s development path.
Jaishankar went on to say that India has achieved a deserved global status in terms of economics and technology, while Pakistan continues to cling to an “old scenario.” He noted, “Today, our brand is technology, while their brand (Pakistan’s) is terrorism. We will respond to terrorism if it occurs, but why should we waste our valuable time on them?”
According to NDTV, Jaishankar added that Pakistan, by playing a double game in Afghanistan—supporting the Taliban while cooperating with its adversaries—had ensnared itself in the very terrorism it had long fostered. He stated, “Pakistan played a double game with the Taliban and its opposition, but after the American forces withdrew from Afghanistan, this double game ended, and the terrorism industry that Pakistan had promoted has now trapped the host itself.”
The Indian Foreign Minister expressed regret that despite the changes in India, Pakistan had not moved away from its “dangerous past tendencies.” He remarked, “India has changed. I wish I could say Pakistan has changed too, but unfortunately, they continue many of their bad habits.”
Jaishankar also referred to the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 166 people, as a turning point in India-Pakistan relations. He stated that these attacks led the people of India to the conclusion that they could no longer tolerate such behavior from a neighboring country.
Jaishankar’s comments underscore India’s growing frustration with Pakistan’s inability to change its policies and practices regarding terrorism. While India has embraced technological and economic advancements, Pakistan’s continued reliance on terrorism as a tool of statecraft remains a significant challenge to regional peace and stability. As tensions persist, it is clear that the relationship between India and Pakistan remains deeply impacted by Pakistan’s involvement in promoting terrorist activities.
