4th Round of Iran-US Nuclear talks to be held in Oman

The fourth round of nuclear talks between Iran and the U.S. will take place in Oman, focusing on key issues.

According to international media reports, representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States are scheduled to begin a new round of nuclear negotiations tomorrow, Sunday, May 10, in Muscat, the capital of Oman.

Agence France-Presse (AFP), citing informed sources, reported that the discussions will take place in both direct and indirect formats, facilitated by Omani mediation, similar to previous rounds of talks.

Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr al-Busaidi—who is playing the role of mediator—confirmed that the meeting will be held in Muscat following coordination with both parties. Oman has a long-standing history of hosting backchannel diplomacy between Iran and the West.

The Iranian delegation will be led by Abbas Araghchi, a senior nuclear negotiator, while the U.S. team will be headed by Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President’s Special Representative for Middle East Affairs. Both figures have previously participated in earlier rounds of discussions.

Prior negotiations were held in Muscat, Rome, and again in Muscat, and both Tehran and Washington had characterized those rounds as “constructive,” despite persistent disagreements over the scope and sequencing of commitments.

The main goal of the current talks is to reach a framework that prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, while securing the lifting of U.S.-imposed economic sanctions on Tehran. This objective is aligned with longstanding international concerns over nuclear proliferation and regional security stability.

Analysts believe that Oman’s neutral stance and its history of discreet diplomacy make it a suitable venue for these sensitive discussions. According to the International Crisis Group and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, progress in Muscat could serve as a vital stepping stone for broader multilateral efforts.

As global tensions remain high and regional security hangs in the balance, the outcome of these talks could significantly shape the trajectory of U.S.-Iran relations. Observers emphasize that a breakthrough—however incremental—would reduce the risk of military confrontation and enhance prospects for regional cooperation.
