On Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs denied U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that the ceasefire between India and Pakistan was a result of trade incentives offered by Washington. Trump had suggested that the promise of increased trade played a crucial role in reducing tensions between the two countries.
The spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated during a weekly press conference that senior officials from New Delhi and Washington had been in contact after the recent military tensions between India and Pakistan. However, no discussions on trade took place during these talks.
Trump had announced on Monday that he had proposed trade incentives to both India and Pakistan in a bid to reduce their military standoff. He claimed that if tensions were not de-escalated, the trade relationship with the U.S. would be at risk.
In his comments, Trump emphasized the importance of trade, suggesting it as one of the key factors influencing the ceasefire. He also expressed that he had offered to mediate not just the ceasefire but also the longstanding Kashmir dispute between the two nations.
Kashmir has been a region of dispute between India and Pakistan for decades, with both countries claiming full sovereignty over it. The region has witnessed multiple conflicts between the two nations, making it a critical point of tension in South Asia.
India, however, firmly rejected Trump’s offer of mediation, reiterating its long-standing stance that any issue related to the region of Jammu and Kashmir must be resolved bilaterally between India and Pakistan, with no foreign interference.
India’s firm position on the Kashmir dispute and the rejection of foreign mediation reflects the country’s longstanding diplomatic approach. Despite external pressures, India remains committed to resolving bilateral issues without third-party involvement.
