Downtown Albany launches Wayfinding sign system
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) launched its new Capital Wayfinding Program to improve navigation in downtown Albany. The program will feature 69 new signs to help residents, employees and visitors discover what Albany has to offer.
The city has allocated $643,620 in American Rescue Plan Act funding for the program. The Albany Parking Authority has contributed $111,000 for the installation, and the Downtown Albany BID will cover the remaining balance.
The Wayfinding program includes the installation of pedestrian kiosks, car guides, and parking trailblazers. The new signs will replace older, antiquated signs, doubling the amount of previous ones.
"People visiting downtowns across the country rely on Wayfinding tools to know where to go, to learn more about where they are visiting, and to enhance their experience. The City of Albany is proud to have invested a portion of our APRA funding to make this project a reality," Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said. "With the $400 million investment from the State and Governor Hochul, the installation of this signage will reaffirm Downtown's vibrancy, diversity, and history, while further validating their decision to invest in Albany."
The informational kiosks and guides will highlight Albany's history. The detailed maps will include restaurants, retailers, banks, churches and attractions.
Additionally, the program will include an Ambassador Program in which ambassadors will greet visitors and downtown employees, providing directions and information about Albany.
"This new comprehensive Wayfinding signage system is a game changer for downtown Albany. As one of the oldest cities in the country, we boast a unique and extensive inventory of cultural and heritage assets, diverse neighborhoods, landmarks, parks, locally owned small businesses, and numerous amenities," Georgette Steffens, Downtown Albany BID Executive Director, said. "Now, when visitors or employees need assistance navigating our vibrant city, we provide a clear guide to parking, attractions, restaurants, and much more. We are extremely grateful to Mayor Sheehan and the COVID Recovery Taskforce for supporting this initiative, and to President Biden's American Rescue Plan for providing the funds that allowed us to launch this much-needed project."
All the new signs and information are expected to be completed within the next few weeks. For more information on the BID, visit downtownalbany.org or call (518) 465-2143.
