Four-car crash sparks tailbacks on busy motorway as cops warn ‘please avoid the area’
A FOUR-WAY crash on one of Britain’s busiest motorways has caused huge queues of traffic.
The collision took place on a motorway in the midlands and delays of up to half an hour are expected.
The crash took place on the M42 southbound between Junction 10 and Junction 9, throwing hundreds of journeys into chaos.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene of the incident, which took place this afternoon.
The crash caused delays as one of the motorway’s busy lanes was forced to close.
Queues quickly reached two miles in length, while drivers faced delays of up to half an hour.
A spokesperson for Atherstone and Coleshill Police has said: “We are dealing with a 4-vehicle road traffic incident between M42 Junction 10 to Junction 9 heading towards Kingsbury.
“Please avoid the area.”
Traffic information service Inrix has weighed in on the situation too.
A spokesperson for the brand said: “Queueing traffic and one lane closed due to accident on M42 Southbound from J10 A5 Watling Street (Tamworth) to J9 A4097 Kingsbury Road.”
National Highways confirmed at 3.02pm that the second lane had reopened.
However, the agency took to X (formerly Twitter) to tell drivers that delays are expected to continue.
The post read: “All lanes are now OPEN on the M42 southbound between J10 Tamworth and J9 Coleshill.
“There are 30 minute residual delays. Thank you for your patience.”
The M42 has previously been branded as “Britain’s worst motorway”.
Drivers have slammed the 40-mile road as being rife with “delays, roadworks and potholes”.
Watchdog Transport Focus found that the road had an abysmal approval score of 56.
Meanwhile, the M40 was the UK’s favourite motorway – earning a satisfaction score of 79 per cent.
