Newark Airport Warns of Possible Measles Exposure
The Newark Liberty International Airport has faced major issues recently, with NBC News correspondent Tom Costello citing an anonymous air traffic controller who called the airport "not safe" amid mass delays and cancellations. Now, the airport is facing another issue.
This week, the New Jersey Department of Health issued a warning of possible measles exposure in the Newark Liberty International Airport after a case was confirmed in an individual who spent several hours in the airport on May 12.
The health officials warned that anyone who was in Newark Airport's Terminal B between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday, May 12, might have been exposed to measles, according to CBS News.
Those who have been exposed to measles could develop symptoms of the disease as late as June 2. Measles symptoms can include high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a rash that first appears on the face and spreads down the body.
The NJDOH has urged parents and caregivers to be aware of symptoms and to stay up to date with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination to prevent the "highly contagious virus" from spreading.
The health organization reminded everyone that the most effective way to prevent measles is to receive two doses of the MMR vaccine and warned that the highest-risk group includes unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals.
