Katie Holmes makes rare red carpet appearance as ex Tom Cruise swerves awkward question about estranged daughter Suri
KATIE Holmes has made a rare red carpet appearance, after her ex Tom Cruise very awkwardly swerved a Father’s Day question over his estranged daughter Suri, who he shares with her.
Insiders say the 62-year-old actor hasn’t seen his daughter Suri for 12 years, including missing her 18th birthday in April.
Tom’s ex wife Katie, 46, gained sole custody of Suri in 2012, along with a generous settlement which sees Tom paying a reported £325,000 a year for his daughter’s care.
And he was quick to swerve a Father’s Day question while on the red carpet for his new film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning premiere, last week.
Tom was asked: “Father’s Day is right around the corner, what would an ideal Father’s Day look like for you?”
The star appeared to awkwardly try and shrug off the question, as he replied: “Hey, you know, just having fun man.”
Tom added: “Making movies, big adventure, having a great time.”
The star failed to mention any of his children in his response to the Father’s Day question.
The Top Gun star is close to his older children — Isabella, who lives a quiet life in London, and son Connor, a fishing guide in Florida — who are both heavily involved in Scientology.
He adopted them with second wife, actress Nicole Kidman, who has been allegedly cut from their lives as a “suppressed person” — SP — someone who does not believe in the church.
Aussie actress Nicole, 57 — who filed for divorce in 2001 after 11 years of marriage — has not spoken to Tom for more than 20 years.
Fans were left angered by Tom’s response to the Father’s Day question, as one person replied: “Making movies? That’s definitely not a Dad activity. His loss.”
Another echoed: “A simple question about Father’s Day and he can’t answer it. He has gotten to a point where all he can talk about is movies and his love of movies. What about being a parent, Tom? There was a time when that was important to you. Sad for this man.”
Meanwhile, Tom’s ex Katie was recently seen looking completely unphased, after his red carpet appearance and Father’s Day questioning.
The 46-year-old actress looked in good spirits, despite Tom’s awkward response, as she enjoyed a night out at Tod’s Cocktail Party in New York on Tuesday this week.
Katie wore her highlighted brown hair in a side do, and let it cascade down her body.
The star opted for a bold eye look, and was seen in a strapless brown dress, which she accessorised with a white hand bag and brown heels.
Katie was pictured roaming around in the store of the luxury Italian brand, rubbing shoulders with the likes of actors Andrew Scott and Christian Slater.
Dawson’s Creek star Katie is said to have left Tom before Suri, then five, was old enough to be properly indoctrinated into the church.
He was filming in Iceland in 2012 when Katie phoned to say she wanted a divorce and would be taking their daughter away from LA and the Scientology Celebrity Centre, a hotel-style complex, where they lived.
There is speculation that Tom gave Katie, whose dad is a high-flying lawyer, custody to avoid the church being dragged through the courts.
The terms of their divorce settlement are ultra secret but documents show Tom agreed to pay Katie £325,000 a year until Suri turns 18, as well as all of his daughter’s expenses, including college fees.
