Beloved SportsCenter Anchor Out at ESPN After 25 Years
A longtime ESPN SportsCenter anchor's time at the network is coming to an end.
Stan Verrett, who has been at ESPN since 2000, will conclude his run at the Worldwide Leader at the end of the summer. According to Front Office Sports' Ryan,Glasspiegel, ESPN does not intend to renew Verrett's contract.
There are still plans for the 59-year-old broadcaster to continue hosting SportsCenter in the coming weeks, and Glasspiegel says Verrett will also be included in the program's “50 States in 50 Days” tour, which begins June 27.
Verrett addressed his future on X/Twitter Wednesday afternoon, confirming that his time at ESPN is coming to a close.
"My life is in Los Angeles is now. Nothing but gratitude for 25 years of living a dream at ESPN. I’m not retiring. Really excited about the future and some incredible opportunities. Stay tuned," Verrett wrote.
Verrett, who is from Louisiana, began anchoring the 1 a.m. ET edition of SportsCenter from Los Angeles alongside Neil Everett in 2009. Everett retired from the network in 2023.
Until earlier this week, Verrett had been hosting the late-night edition with Linda Cohn. ESPN previously announced in March that it would be shuttering its Los Angeles production location and moving the late-night SportsCenter to its home base in Bristol, Connecticut.
The final episode of the Los Angeles SportsCenter aired Monday night, with Everett making a return guest appearance.
"Ended too soon. The LA Sportscenter is no more. We said goodbye Monday Night. @stanverrett #NeilEverett," Cohn tweeted on Tuesday.
It's unclear if this shift factored into the decision to cut ties with Verrett, but it could explain the "my life is in Los Angeles" line in the veteran TV personality's social media statement.
As of now, ESPN has not commented on Verrett being let go.
