Pakistan, India, extend Airspace restrictions amid Kashmir Tensions

Pakistan and India extended airspace restrictions for another month amid rising Kashmir tensions, affecting Indian-operated flights but not international carriers.

Pakistan and India have extended their mutual airspace restrictions for another month, continuing a ban initially imposed in April following escalated tensions in Kashmir.

According to Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the restrictions will now remain in place until June 24. The extension specifically targets aircraft linked to India, including those registered in the country, owned or operated by Indian companies, or leased to Indian airlines.

In an official statement, the CAA stated: “Under this directive, no flight operated by Indian companies or operators will be permitted to enter or transit through Pakistani airspace.”

The restrictions do not apply to international carriers from other countries, which will continue to have access to Pakistan’s airspace as usual.

The airspace restrictions were first introduced by both nations in April 2025, after an exchange of gunfire near the Line of Control (LoC) in Indian-administered Kashmir. The incident heightened regional tensions and raised concerns over the safety of civil aviation.

This is not the first time the two nuclear-armed neighbors have closed airspace to each other. A similar situation occurred in 2019 following the Pulwama attack and subsequent Balakot airstrike, leading to prolonged disruptions in South Asian air traffic.

Analysts say the current move reflects ongoing geopolitical frictions, especially surrounding the disputed region of Kashmir. While diplomatic channels remain open, both nations have yet to de-escalate military and aviation-related tensions.

The continued airspace closure has economic implications as well, particularly for Indian carriers that now face longer, costlier flight routes to West Asia and Europe. Pakistani operators, however, face less impact due to limited eastbound operations.

Observers urge both sides to engage in meaningful dialogue to avoid further deterioration of air travel connectivity and promote regional stability. Restoration of airspace access would not only benefit commercial airlines but also signal a willingness for diplomatic progress.
