Train fare dodger tells staff he’ll ‘get away with it’ before definitely not getting away with it
A fare dodger who insisted that he shouldn’t have to pay for public transport has been given a fine.
The unnamed passenger was stopped at Waterloo station where he was suspected of taking a journey without a ticket.
The encounter was caught on camera and has now appeared on Channel 5’s Fare Dodgers: at War with the Law.
At one point, he even claimed he ‘didn’t know how to spell his own name’ and threatened to walk off.
Ticket inspector Sam asked him: ‘So you’re just going to fare evade and try and get away with it. Is that what you are saying?’
The passenger starts off with a blasé attitude, telling him ‘I will get away with it’.
He turns a little less cocky when he’s reminded that he’s being recorded and the footage will be shared with British Transport Police.
He told Sam: ‘That doesn’t bother me. I don’t know why I’m standing here. I could just walk away to be honest.’
Back-up swiftly arrives and eventually he told Sam his details, but continued to remain defiant, adding: ‘I couldn’t give a toss. I’m not paying that. I’m not paying for transport’.
In the end, he walked off with a £105.60 fine, which would be discounted if he pays within 21 days.
Around 3.4 per cent of passengers on TfL services travel without paying the correct fare.
The transport authority spent almost £22 million on a fare dodging crackdown last year.
The Channel 5 series previously showed another fare dodger being caught in the act after evading £3,500 in unpaid tickets.
He was found having used a card with no money on it to repeatedly open station gates without having paid a penny in fares.
