Trump’s immigration policies leave Afghans in the US in Limbo

The Afghanistan Analysts Network warned about the difficult situation faced by Afghan migrants in the United States amid slow asylum processes.

The Afghanistan Analysts Network reports that many Afghan refugees in the United States, particularly in Texas, are experiencing severe uncertainty and hardship because of restrictive immigration policies implemented during the Trump administration. The organization highlights that the asylum application review process for Afghan applicants has slowed down significantly.

According to the network, since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, about 200 thousand Afghan citizens have migrated to the United States. Most now reside in states such as California, Virginia, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, and notably Texas.

Abdullah, a 37-year-old resident of Texas, expressed frustration over the slow progress of his asylum case. He shared, “I have not seen my wife and four children for nearly four years. Until my case is approved, I cannot bring my family to the U.S.”

The report also references five executive orders issued by former President Donald Trump between his presidency and July 2025, which have imposed restrictions on asylum procedures. It notes that approximately 10,000 Afghans have been affected by the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

The Afghanistan Analysts Network further states, “While some Afghans still hold hope for improvement, others have chosen silence or avoid speaking to journalists. The current conditions make many feel forgotten and abandoned.”

Statistical data from the network reveals that the Afghan population in the U.S. has increased substantially, from about 65,000 in 2010 to roughly 220,000 in 2024, reflecting a growing diaspora amid challenging circumstances.

These developments underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Afghan refugees in the United States, who continue to seek safety and stability amid complex immigration laws. Advocacy groups urge the U.S. government to streamline asylum procedures and reinstate protections to support this vulnerable community.

Without timely solutions, many Afghan families risk prolonged separation and uncertainty, highlighting a humanitarian concern that requires urgent attention from policymakers and civil society alike.
