Crude putdown used by prominent Republican mad about Trump's latest target

President Donald Trump has now begun attacking a key right-wing legal group that was essential to one of his greatest accomplishments for the conservative movement in his first term — and a key Republican commentator is calling him out over it.

"I love how Trump attacks the Federalist Society and all the critical thinkers now insist the Federalist Society is the worst thing ever and, in their tweets, show they have no understanding of how the Federalist Society operates," wrote Erick Erickson on X. "It's all just performative leg humping."

Erickson, a former staffer on the George W. Bush presidential campaign who has also worked with Georgia GOP candidates and become a prominent pundit, has previously described himself as anti-Trump but has gone back and forth, supporting the president at times but also calling out elements of Trump world as grifters and cranks.

The Federalist Society is a notorious legal organization that has created a right-wing "pipeline" for lawyers straight out of school to land prestigious positions and federal judgeships. Judges linked to it were key to Trump's appointments to the federal bench in his first term, and have hands in a wide variety of reinterpretations of the law and Constitution under right-wing principles.

However, last month, the president turned on the Federalist Society and its longtime leader Leonard Leo, blaming them for installing the judges who ruled against his recently-imposed tariff system, which is still in effect pending appeals.

"I was new to Washington, and it was suggested that I use The Federalist Society as a recommending source on Judges," wrote Trump in a lengthy rant posted to his Truth Social platform. "I did so, openly and freely, but then realized that they were under the thumb of a real 'sleazebag' named Leonard Leo, a bad person who, in his own way, probably hates America, and obviously has his own separate ambitions. He openly brags how he controls Judges, and even Justices of the United States Supreme Court — I hope that is not so, and don’t believe it is! In any event, Leo left The Federalist Society to do his own 'thing.'"
