Two people seriously hurt after crash near London’s Blackwall Tunnel

Two people were injured after a serious crash near the Blackwall Tunnel in south east London this morning.

Motorists have been caught in severe delays near the Blackwall Tunnel after a stretch of the A102 closed northbound.

The major road has been closed since about 1.30am between the Sun In The Sands Roundabout and the A206 Woolwich Road Flyover.

Drivers face heavy congestion, with queues snaking back to Falconwood and alternative routes through Blackheath, Shooters Hill, Eltham and Lewisham.

Detectives are investigating the collision, which happened near Westcombe Park train station.

Two people were injured and taken to a major trauma centre, the London Ambulance Service told Metro.

A spokesperson said: ‘We sent two ambulance crews, an incident response officer and our Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.

‘The first paramedic arrived in less than five minutes.

‘We treated two patients at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre as a priority.’

Only one lane is open southbound past the scene, which is causing congestion in both directions.

Drivers using the Blackwall Tunnel southern approach were told to ‘use an alternative route’ after the crash near Westcombe Park, a TfL traffic alert says.

Roads to the Woolwich Ferry are also busy.

Bus routes 132 and SL4 are on a detour.

Traffic is also using nearby residential roads between Blackheath and Charlton as people try to get to work.

One driver was caught in the road closure shortly after the crash last night.

He said: ‘If you’re coming home southbound out of London, don’t come through the Blackwall / Silvertown tunnel tonight. Been stuck here 45 minutes.’
