‘He’s a winner’ – Tottenham player becomes latest to come out in support of Ange Postecoglou

Pedro Porro has become the latest Tottenham man to throw his weight behind Ange Postecoglou, explaining why the Australian deserves another season after leading the club to European glory.

A debate has been raging on social media since it emerged a few days ago that Daniel Levy has already decided to sack Ange Postecoglou.

Many Spurs fans are social media are outraged at the idea that the Australian could be let go after delivering a trophy, while Ramon Vegas believes it is “incredibly disrespectful” to even consider sacking Postecoglou.

The one thing that might add weight to the Australian’s prospects of keeping his job is the feeling inside the dressing room, with Porro shedding light on what the players are thinking about the rumours.

Several Tottenham stars have already backed Postecoglou to remain in charge next season, and the right-back has now had his say.

Porro revealed that he owes the 59-year-old a lot for his improvement at Tottenham and admits that it would be painful if the club decided to let him go.

When asked about the rumours doing the rounds of Postecoglou’s impending sacking, the defender told The Guardian: “I’m not thinking about club football right now because I am here with Spain and we have two important games this week, but him continuing would be good for the dressing room.

“He has built a very good group and coaches also need time. In the league things didn’t go well but he makes you win a trophy. That’s important too. The people in the dressing room with weight have to understand that. But as I say I’m thinking about the national team now; there will be time for that.”

When asked if he means that some players do not understand what he said about the importance of trophies, he responded: “No, it’s simply just that … we’re inside and we know more or less how things are, no? I’m not going to lie, it did impact me to see [people say] they were going to sack him, to be honest. I’m very close to him.

“He’s been an important coach for me and it’s thanks to him that I have brought out my [best] football these two years. It’s complicated because in football in general things don’t always depend on you but, honestly, in the team – I think, in my opinion – we’re happy with him.”

The main argument towards sacking the former Celtic boss, which seems to be a minority opinion at the moment among the fan base, is Tottenham’s shocking league results.

Spurs have had statistically their worst-ever season in Premier League history, suffering 22 defeats and finishing just one place outside the drop zone.

When asked about such an abject domestic season ending with such glory for Tottenham fans, Porro said: “It’s football, and supporters deserved something good at the end of all the bad, the suffering, he suggests, almost as if fate repaid them. But there is something else: priority, environment, a shift.

“The coach wanted to compete in both competitions because he’s a winner, [But] when you have a clear idea that you can do something big, you focus more on one thing than another. We knew that through the Premier League, it was impossible to reach Europe and that the only option, the only objective, was to win the Europa League.

“In the Europa League, different demands are made of you. You have to focus on pressing better, and defending better. You saw it: three clean sheets in the last three games. Don’t let in goals, and we have dynamite up front. We said if we kept a clean sheet we had a good chance.”
