Wicked For Good Trailer: 9 Moments We Need To Talk About Immediately

It’s almost time to defy gravity once again.

We’re now just months away from the release of the much-hyped musical sequel Wicked For Good, which will bring the second half of the hit stage show to the big screen.

On Wednesday night, the first trailer for the Wicked sequel was posted online – and is already generating a lot of conversation online.

Here are just nine of the two-minute trailer’s biggest talking points…

First of all, yes, it looks like that’s Glinda in a wedding dress

When we first clap eyes on Ariana Grande’s character, we learn that she has ditched her signature pink in favour of an elaborate white dress – and as the clip continues, it looks like this is actually a show-stopping wedding gown.

Glinda and Fiyero never actually make it down the aisle in the stage musical (although he is referred to as her fiancé in the second half opener For Good), with Jon M Chu teasing to Vanity Fair: “It’s life or death for all of them, so [adding] a wedding seemed appropriate.”

Given the title of the Wicked sequel, it was always a given that we’d hear at least a small section of the musical’s eleven o’clock duet, and Ariana’s vocals sound truly beautiful on the part we get to hear.

True to form, Cynthia Erivo doing the incantations heard on No Good Deed have given us chills every time we’ve watched the Wicked For Good trailer so far.

There’s also a snippet of Cynthia riffing something unfamiliar to Wicked fans

Cut to the 14 seconds mark, when Glinda urges Elphana to come in “before the monkeys spot you”, and you might hear a sample of something that’s never been done in the stage version of Wicked before.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Elphaba had a new solo in Wicked For Good (as does Glinda), so it’s safe to assume a quick snippet of that has been included in the new trailer.

We also see more of Dorothy than ever before

Dorothy Gale is never actually seen in the stage production of Wicked, though events in the sequel appear to be more direct retellings of the classic Wizard Of Oz story – including when we see the Wizard encouraging the youngster and her companions to bring him Elphaba’s broom.

There’s also a close-up of some blue shoes, as well as Dorothy (and her little dog, too!) first making their way down the yellow brick road.

Rumours have previously suggested that Matilda’s Alisha Weir will play Dorothy in Wicked For Good, though this is yet to be confirmed.

The Wizard Of Oz references don’t stop there, though

As well as a closer look at the early stages of the yellow brick road, Elphaba is seen writing a message to the citizens of Oz using her broom, just like her counterpart in the 1939 classic movie.

Wicked For Good allows us to see more of Elphaba’s life in exile

The sequel’s runtime is actually pretty much the same length as the entire stage show, meaning certain aspects of the story will be even more fleshed out than the stage show.

Seemingly, this means we’ll see more of what Elphaba’s life is like after the events of the first film, now she’s been banished from Oz.

The citizens of Oz uniting against Elphaba feels so much more intense on screen

Because of the limitations of the stage, when the Ozians form a mob against Elphaba, there are only so many people that can appear at any one time.

The screen allows even more supporting artists to form part of the rally, which makes it feel even more unsettling and really allows us to put ourselves in Elphaba’s shoes.

Meanwhile, another moment suggests an Animal uprising – which we can’t help but notice appears to be happening in the same setting as Glinda and Fiyero’s wedding…

We don’t know what’s going on here, but we’re excited to find out what it is

Elphaba and Glinda floating through the air and sharing a moment atop two conjoined brooms, surrounded by pink stars? Love it. We’ve no idea what part of the story this is supposed to be, but we’re excited to find out.
