Kemi Badenoch Says Introducing Trump-Style Travel Ban Could Be 'Viable' For UK

Kemi Badenoch has claimed that introducing a Donald Trump-inspired travel ban for people of certain nationalities trying to enter the UK could be “viable”.

The US president implemented a ban on individuals coming from 12 countries who he alleges have “hostile attitudes” towards the States.

It means that. from June 9, people from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen will not be able to enter the US.

Those from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, will also be hit with partial restrictions.

Badenoch made a speech today announcing that the Tories were launching a commission into just how the UK could leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

She said Britain will likely “need to leave” the ECHR because it had become a “sword used to attack democratic decisions and common sense”.

“Our asylum system is completely broken”, the Tory leader claimed, while calling Britain the “world’s softest touch” with immigration.

She told journalists: “On the travel ban, that’s one of the points I made in the speech, that parliament needs to be able to decide who comes into the country, for how long, and who needs to leave.

“That does include travel bans. On a country-specific basis, if it’s often tougher, it’s more vague, but I think there are situations where that is more viable.

“That’s doesn’t mean I agree with what Donald Trump has done. I haven’t actually seen the list of countries he has banned.

“I’m much more focused on what is happening here.”
