The President Trump criticized US strategy in Afghanistan, saying it fought the war as if it had no intention to win.
The U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking at the “Investing in America” summit at the White House on Monday, sharply criticized past American military strategies in Afghanistan. He claimed that U.S. forces fought in a manner that suggested they had no intention of winning the war, describing the approach as “deeply upsetting.”
In his remarks, Trump subtly shifted the blame for the failure in Afghanistan onto the Biden administration. He emphasized that the style of warfare during the two-decade-long conflict was misguided and inefficient. “We fought like we didn’t want to win,” Trump said, suggesting the war could have ended much differently under stronger leadership.
Trump went further to tie America’s current struggles to what he sees as Biden’s poor leadership and mismanagement of the Afghanistan war. “Nobody can defeat us if we have the right leadership,” he stated. “But when incompetent people are in charge, like those who oversaw the Afghanistan war, disaster follows.”
The president described the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021 as “the saddest and most catastrophic” moment in American history. He directly blamed President Joe Biden, referring to the withdrawal as a disaster caused by “bad generals like Milley and others,” asserting they lacked competence and vision.
Trump also claimed that his leadership marked a turning point for the U.S., saying he had removed many of the so-called “bad generals” and replaced them with more effective military leaders. “Now is the time to celebrate what we are doing,” he added, highlighting his belief that he had improved the nation’s military readiness.
While Trump continues to criticize the way the U.S. exited Afghanistan, he has yet to present a clear or consistent policy on Afghanistan’s future. His campaign and public addresses remain largely focused on blaming his successors without offering a specific roadmap for U.S. engagement in the region.
