Fentanyl investigation leads to Topeka chase and crash
TOPEKA (KSNT) - One person is in custody after a Shawnee County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to stop a car that was connected to an ongoing fentanyl investigation Monday.
The sheriff's office reports that at about 3:30 p.m. on Monday, June 16 deputies tried to stop a car that was suspected of being connected to the distribution of fentanyl. When deputies tried to stop the car, it fled at high speeds until deputies lost sight of the vehicle.
Deputies found the car a short time later after it crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Southwest 27th Street and Southwest Topeka Boulevard before coming to a stop in the backyard of a local residence.
The sheriff's office said the drive, a 42-year-old Kansas City man, was taken to an area hospital for treatment and was later booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on the following charges:
- Felony flee or attempt to elude.
- Aggravated battery.
- Improper driving on laned roadway.
- Fail to stop for a red traffic control device.
- Driving while license suspended.
- Felony interference with LEO.
- Reckless driving.
- Fail to use a turn signal prior to 100 feet.
- Possession of a hallucinogenic drug.
- Possession of drug paraphernalia.
The sheriff's office is still searching for a passenger who was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
