Cubs Bullpen Ace Has An Issue to Keep an Eye On
One of the best storylines of the 2025 MLB season has been Drew Pomeranz’s comeback. The left-handed pitcher last appeared in the majors for the San Diego Padres in 2021 before his return with the Chicago Cubs back in April. Now, the 36-year-old has turned into somewhat of a bullpen ace for Craig Counsell, but there’s one issue looming over Pomeranz.
The lefty made his 20th appearance for the Cubs this past Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pomeranz continued his scoreless streak. He’s now up to 18.1 shutout innings with the Cubs. Pomeranz has been part of a group of veteran relievers that have come together to lead the top bullpen in MLB since April 19.
Now, it doesn’t exactly seem like it’s a guarantee that Pomeranz will continue to be a permanent fixture in the bullpen throughout the rest of the 2025 season.
I guess there’s never a guarantee that a player will remain healthy, but the Cubs have already made it known that Pomeranz is pitching through some discomfort. After his relief appearance against the Pirates Counsell mentioned that the veteran reliever was dealing with lower back tightness.
According to MLB.com, Pomeranz was going to be re-evaluated on Tuesday, prior to the team’s four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

There hasn’t been news coming from the Cubs on Tuesday, so maybe Pomeranz’s back tightness has been alleviated after a few days off.
Pomeranz has recorded four holds and a save with the Cubs since he was acquired from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for cash considerations in April. The left-hander has excelled in every role that’s been thrown his way since joining the Cubs, serving as the opener twice, pitching in high-leverage situations, middle relief and sometimes simply being used against tough lefty matchups.
He’s come through with very little resistance. The left-hander has a 16/5 K/BB ratio, giving up an opponent slash line of .123/.227/.140. Pomeranz has allowed a total of seven hits and only one has gone for extra bases, a lone double among the 66 hitters he’s faced this season.
Fingers crossed that the back issue doesn’t flare up for Pomeranz, but that’s definitely something to keep your eye on. Even if it’s not a major issue there’s a chance that the Cubs take the cautious route with Pomeranz and place him on the injured list once Porter Hodge returns just to maintain roster flexibility in the bullpen.
