Optimist Ulster Championships
No less than 28 Royal Cork Yacht Club optimist sailors travelled to Larne, Co. Antrim to represent the club at the IODAI Ulster Championships last weekend. Royal Cork Yacht Club was well represented across all fleets with 11 sailors in Senior fleet, 7 in Junior fleet and 10 in Regatta Racing. Saturday brought incessant rain and light winds, but organisers still managed to complete two races for the series.
Camping was difficult in these conditions but offset by the warm welcome from East Antrim Boat Club and Sully’s BBQ helped to warm spirits on a damp Saturday evening. Thankfully Sunday brought drier conditions and more wind, allowing 3 further races to be completed.
On the podium RCYC had a very successful event across all fleets, at prize giving all 28 sailors cheered loudly for their teammates. A grand total of 6 RCYC sailors finished in the top 10 in Senior fleet. Isaac Vaughan finished 2nd overall, a point behind winner Kate Spain from RSGYC followed closely by Annabelle Wilson in 4th and Amy Whyte in 6th. Jamie Blennerhassett recorded an impressive 2 race wins to come 7th with Joe Kingston’s 8th and Lilly Sheridan’s 9th position completing the RCYC Senior fleet top 10 finishers. In Junior fleet George Creighton won 1st place overall with an outstanding 3 race wins and a strong performance from Jack Ryan saw him achieve 6th place overall. John Keating making his senior fleet debut finished an impressive 15th. The Regatta Racing fleet proved to be very competitive with Will McElligott finishing the series in 1st place. Also in Regatta Racing Nicholas Nyhan and John Sheridan enjoyed great racing to finish 4th and 5th with Ciaran Keating finishing 8th. The sailors were coached throughout the weekend by James Dwyer, Rory Whyte and Blake Vaughan. All 28 sailors performed very well and did Royal Cork Yacht Club proud both on and off the water, well done to all.
